Welcome to Aster & Fern’s brand new series, The Social Media Sessions, where we chat to one of our favourite small businesses about how they use social media and the impact that it has on their business. We love to discuss social media and even though we use it, work with it and teach it pretty much 24/7, we’re still learning and picking up hints and tips whenever and wherever we can. And the best way to do that is to talk and to share stories, successes and difficulties with others. We hope that you enjoy these new monthly posts.
Meet Zoë Oughton from Relaxing Reflexology
Hi Zoë. First up, can you please tell us a little bit about yourself and your business?
Hi! I’m Zoe and I’m a reflexology practitioner who specialises in womens’ health. From PMT and fertility, to maternity and menopause. I also have experience in treating ladies who have had breast cancer and have developed lympohdema as a result – reflexology lymph drainage is a life changing treatment! I am based in Altrincham and practice in 3 clinics in Bramhall, Sale and Stretton and also work mobile.
What role does social media play in your business?
A big part as it’s how I communicate with a lot of clients. I do a lot of videos showing hand reflexology techniques – these have been popular in lockdown as I have not been able to work and see my clients. Posting daily has kept me visible and in touch, even if it’s just a post about ice creams. People also like seeing reviews – they can read them on Facebook and I often screenshot them and put them on Instagram. People like people and people buy from nice people so it’s important for my clients to get to know me.
Do you think your business would be as successful without social media?
No.
Which channel is most effective for you and why?
Facebook, it’s more well known and used than Instagram and Twitter, I feel. I think more people see it as a newspaper almost – they like a mixture of stories and photos.
And which is your preferred channel to spend time on?
Facebook, although what I post on Instagram is linked to my business page anyway.
How long would you say you spend on social media per day?
1 – 1½ hours.
Is there anything you dislike about a particular social media channel – or all of them?
I don’t get anything from Twitter or LinkedIn. I feel I don’t do things right on there.
Is there anything about any of the channels where you think, ‘I’d love to know how to do that.’
I’d like to be better at Instagram on stories and posts and have a more organised grid. And use hashtags better!
What does social media success look like to you? Do you have any goals?
Lots of interactions, shares, likes and comments. I try to achieve that on each post, although it doesn’t always happen.
Is there a business/social media account that you really look up to?
Helen Slater Coaching & TVEA (who does her social media for her).
And who do you follow for pure enjoyment?
@thegirlwholovesgin on Instagram
@clarewatkins_stylist on Instagram
Max Out in the Lake District on Facebook
